MiKTeX is a modern application of TeX / LaTeX and related software. TeX is a typesetting system written by Donald Ervin Knuth whose purpose is to create beautiful books – especially books that contain a lot of math.
Installing MiKTeX Free Easy, Convenient and Flexible
It is very easy to install MiKTeX on a computer running Windows, Mac, or Linux. The installation wizard walks you through the steps. You don’t have to be a computer expert. A full set of plugins (software, styles, fonts) are available to help you typeset your documents.

Run the Basic Installer
‘Basic MiKTeX Installer‘ is used to set up a standard TeX/LaTeX system. The installer is available on the download page. You can start it with a double-click on the downloaded file.
Copy Terms
The wizard first displays the Copy Terms: read the text carefully and click. I agree with the Copy Terms if you agree. Then, to proceed to the next page, click ‘Next.’
Installation Scope
If you have administrator privileges, you can choose from two options:
- Preparing a private TeX installation (per user).
- Set up a shared (system-wide) TeX installation.

Setting up a shared (system-wide) installation requires administrator privileges, and you should keep in mind that maintaining a shared installation can become complex and error-prone. When you’ve chosen your choice, click ‘Next’ to go to the next page.
Installation Guide
You can accept the default installation directory. If you want, you can select another location. Click ‘Next’ to go to the next page.
On the next page, you will be presented with a list of components to install. Check the boxes next to all components that you wish to install, and uncheck the boxes next to all components that you do not wish to install. Click ‘Next’ when you are done.
On the following page, you will have the option to install third-party software. This software can be useful but is not necessary to work correctly. Check or uncheck the boxes next to the software that you wish to install, and click ‘Next’ when you are done.

Settings
You may select your favorite paper size using the wizard: You may also modify the default behavior of the integrated package installer. Select Ask me first, if you want to confirm the installation of the required packages.
Always select, if required, packages will be installed without confirmation. Never select if you don’t allow missing packages to be installed. All preferences can be changed later. Click ‘Next’ to go to the next page.

Review
Before you begin the actual installation process, you get a chance to review your decisions. If you are satisfied with the settings, click Start to begin the actual installation.

During this time, you may see a progress bar or other indicators to show you how the installation is progressing. Once the installation is complete, you will see a confirmation window and may be prompted to restart your computer. After restarting, you can begin using the new software.
