This personal relationship is not separated by barriers or obstructed by fences. He wants our relationship with God to be transparent and honest, even in times of our weakness and weakness. He certainly wants us to address him without fear or panic, even if our speech is reprimanding.
The prophet’s cry stems from strong faith and submission to the Lord and confidence that he will help and strengthen him, so he rushed to him to tell him what he feels of grief. Pain and weakness. Do you feel like David and go through times when you feel that the Lord has forgotten you!? Remember this wonderful psalm, and repeat it in your daily prayers, to obtain consolation from the Lord.
▶ Psalm 13 (How Long, Lord?)

For the Director of Music. A Psalm of David
1 How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?
2 How long must I wrestle with my thoughts and day after day have sorrow in my heart? How long will my enemy triumph over me?
3 Look on me and answer, Lord my God. Give light to my eyes, or I will sleep in death,
4 and my enemy will say, “I have overcome him,” and my foes will rejoice when I fall.
5 I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been good to me.
6 I will sing the Lord’s praise, for he has been good to me.
1. Why Does God Allow You to Feel Forgotten?
The Heart of God is not cold or distant, but He sometimes allows you to feel forgotten to deepen your relationship with Him. David cried out, “How long, Lord? Will You forget me forever?” This is not a sin, but it is an honest prayer that comes from a place of deep faith. If David felt forgotten, you will feel forgotten too, and this is not a sign that God has abandoned you.
The Heart of God wants your relationship with Him to be transparent and honest, even in times of weakness. He does not want fake smiles or religious words that hide your true feelings. He wants you to come to Him as you are, even if your speech is reprimanding, even if you are angry, and even if you feel that He has failed you.
2. How Long, Lord? The Cry of Honest Faith
The question “How long?” is repeated four times in Psalm 13, showing that David was not silent about his pain. The Heart of God is not threatened by your questions, but He welcomes them because they mean you are still talking to Him. The opposite of faith is not doubt, but silence and indifference. Your cry of “how long?” shows that you still believe He can do something.
The Heart of God would rather hear your angry questions than your silent distance. Do not be afraid to ask God “how long?” because the psalms are full of such questions. He is big enough to handle your doubt, and He is loving enough to listen to your complaints.
3. Will You Forget Me Forever? The Fear of Abandonment
David’s question, “Will You forget me forever?” strikes a chord in every human heart. The Heart of God knows that you fear abandonment, rejection, and being left alone in your struggles. This fear is real, and God does not mock it or dismiss it. He invites you to bring it to Him, just as David did.
The Heart of God has promised never to leave you nor forsake you, but your feelings do not always align with His promises. You may feel forgotten even when you are not forgotten. This is why you need to pray the psalms, to let His truth shape your feelings, and not let your feelings determine your view of God.
4. The Prophet’s Cry Stems from Strong Faith
It may seem contradictory, but David’s cry of abandonment came from strong faith, not from weak faith. The Heart of God is reached by those who fight through their doubts to keep praying. A person with weak faith would simply walk away from God and stop praying. But David kept crying out, even when he felt forgotten, because he believed that God was still there.
The Heart of God honors this kind of stubborn faith that refuses to let go, even when the feelings are not there. Your prayer does not have to be pretty, and it does not have to be theologically perfect. But it must be honest, and it must keep coming back to God, again and again.
5. God Wants You to Admonish Him and Hurry to Him
This is a surprising truth about the Heart of God: He sometimes wants us to hurry to Him and even admonish Him to be with us. Admonish means to correct, to challenge, and to remind God of His promises. This is not disrespect, because it comes from a place of deep relationship. Friends can admonish each other, and you are called a friend of God.
The Heart of God is not fragile, and He does not turn away when you speak to Him with urgency and passion. He wants you to pursue Him, to chase after Him, and to refuse to let Him go. Like Jacob, who wrestled with God until he received a blessing, you are invited to wrestle in prayer.
6. No Barriers or Fences Separate You from God
The Heart of God desires a personal relationship that is not separated by barriers or obstructed by fences. Religion builds walls between you and God, but a relationship tears them down. You do not need a priest, a pastor, or a ritual to reach God. You need an honest heart and a willingness to speak to Him directly.
The Heart of God is accessible to you right now, in this moment, without any mediator except Jesus Christ. The veil of the temple was torn in two, and the Holy of Holies is open to everyone who comes through faith. Do not let guilt, shame, or religious performance keep you away. Run to Him now.
7. Even in Your Weakness, Be Transparent and Honest
David did not wait until he was strong to pray, and he did not pretend to be happy when he was miserable. The Heart of God wants your relationship to be transparent and honest, even in times of your weakness. Weakness is not a barrier to prayer; it is a reason to pray. When you are weak, then you are strong in Him.
The Heart of God is not impressed by your fake strength, but He is moved by your honest weakness. Stop pretending that everything is fine, and stop hiding your pain behind religious words. Come to Him with your tears, your fears, and your failures, and let Him meet you in your weakness.
8. Do Not Fear or Panic When You Pray to God
Fear and panic are the enemies of honest prayer because they make you hide your true feelings. The Heart of God wants you to address Him without fear or panic, even if your speech is reprimanding. You do not need to censor your thoughts or filter your words before you bring them to God. He already knows them anyway.
The Heart of God invites you to come boldly to the throne of grace, not timidly or hesitantly. Boldness means you speak your mind, you ask your questions, and you pour out your heart without fear of punishment. He is not an angry judge waiting to condemn you. He is a loving Father waiting to listen.
9. David Rushed to God to Tell Him His Grief
David did not wait for a church service, a special feeling, or a spiritual breakthrough before he prayed. He rushed to God immediately to tell Him what he felt of grief, pain, and weakness. The Heart of God is not offended by your urgency, but He welcomes it. He would rather have you come messy and raw than not come at all.
The Heart of God teaches you to run to Him first, not last, when you are hurting. Do not call your friends first, do not open the refrigerator first, and do not scroll through social media first. Run to God, tell Him your grief, and let Him comfort you before you seek comfort anywhere else.
10. The Prophet’s Submission and Confidence in the Lord
Even while crying out about feeling forgotten, David remained in submission to the Lord and confident that He would help. The Heart of God is reached by this combination of honesty and trust. You can say “I feel forgotten” while also saying “I trust You.” These are not contradictory, but they are the tension of living by faith.
The Heart of God honors your faith even when your feelings are weak. David’s confidence was not based on his emotions, but on the character of God. He knew that God had helped him in the past, and he believed that God would help him again. Build your confidence on His past faithfulness.
11. Do You Feel That the Lord Has Forgotten You?
If you feel that the Lord has forgotten you today, you are in good company with David and millions of other believers. The Heart of God is not surprised by your feeling, and He is not angry at you for feeling it. The feeling of being forgotten is not a sin, but it is a signal that you need to pray the psalms.
The Heart of God has given you Psalm 13 as a gift for exactly this moment. Do not run away from God because you feel forgotten. Run toward Him with this psalm on your lips. He will not turn you away, and He will not mock your feelings. He will meet you in your honesty.
12. Repeat This Psalm to Obtain Consolation from the Lord
Psalm 13 does not end in despair, but it ends with trust and singing. David says, “But I trust in Your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in Your salvation. I will sing the Lord’s praise, for He has been good to me.” The Heart of God leads you from lament to praise, from crying to singing, from feeling forgotten to trusting in His unfailing love.
The Heart of God wants you to repeat this psalm in your daily prayers, not as a magic formula, but as a tool to retrain your heart. When you pray the words of Scripture, your feelings begin to align with His truth. Do not wait until you feel better to praise Him, but praise Him by faith, and your feelings will eventually follow.
